Create a personalized journal or sketchbook using recycled materials and Boro-inspired stitching.
Participants will create a collage of recycled and new fabric as they stitch a soft cloth cover using a simple running stitch to hold the layers together. The journals can be further embellished with beads, buttons and found objects. Once the cover is stitched each participant will select from several types of paper to add an eclectic feel to the pages of their journal. Several different stitched book binding techniques will also be covered.
Boro stitching, meaning ragged or tattered, has gained popularity in the last few years. Based on clothing from the 19th and 20th centuries, it refers to the mending and stitching practice of impoverished peoples in rural areas of Japan where cotton fabric was scarce. Each piece of clothing was often mended multiple times to extend the life of their working garments creating a patchwork of patches.
Participants are encouraged to bring small pieces of recycled clothing and other personal mementos to add to their journals.
