Safe Spaces

This exhibition presents three distinct series of my work, each addressing different facets of U.S. history and aiming to provoke both internal and external dialogues. True progress, whether personal or societal, requires us to confront discomfort, embrace compromise, and remain open to having our core beliefs challenged. My artistic journey has increasingly focused on honesty and social commentary, using art as a vehicle to highlight these themes. I encourage you to engage with these works, reflect on their messages, and join me in fostering meaningful dialogue and action.

The Great Cover-Up – In this series, I shift from glass to painting to create complex visual narratives. Each piece layers information beneath floral patterns reminiscent of Dutch wallpaper, obscuring a surreal backdrop inspired by the January 6, 2021, Capitol assault. This approach reveals the shifting media portrayals of the event, transitioning from views of insurrectionists to so-called patriots.

Barriers – This series features structures that function as both bridges and walls. My latest interpretation of this concept involves riot shields crafted in glass, serving as historical markers that reflect the current divisions within the United States. Through these fragile forms, I aim to convey the vulnerability of our discourse and the challenges of engaging with opposing perspectives.

The Unexplainable – This series emerged from my growing concern over gun violence as my son entered elementary school. In response, I co-founded The Theriac Project with fellow artists to address the disturbing reality of gun violence in schools. Through unique handblown glass pieces in provocative settings like “Bound to Spiral” and “The Unexpected Cost of Our Perceived Rights,” we explore themes of fragility, loss, and the psychological impact of active shooter threats. The Theriac Project aims to drive legislative change through art and community engagement. We invite those interested in supporting our mission to connect with us via Instagram or sign up at our exhibition. We seek venues for installations, funding for outreach, and partnerships with gun safety organizations like Everytown.org.
