45th National Print
Juror Statement
It was my honor to serve as the juror for the 45th Annual National Print Exhibition. I’d like to thank Artlink Gallery for entrusting me with this process and for their help in facilitating it. I’d also like to congratulate all the artists who entered, regardless of whether your work was selected. It takes a serious commitment to make art – physically, mentally, and emotionally – so thank you for taking the time to share your work with me.
As the juror, I was tasked with selecting 60 works for the exhibition. That was a challenge due to the high quality of work and the diverse range of print media, approaches, and subject matter represented. Inevitably, even some of the works I really liked didn’t make the final cut due to limited space. I might find it difficult to explain exactly why one artist’s work was chosen over another, but generally, I chose work that piqued my curiosity in some way: through craftsmanship and mastery of the medium, pushing the boundaries of the medium, clarity of artistic voice, complexity of the work’s concept, a new interpretation of the subject matter, or the work’s ability to elicit an emotional response. The works that ultimately rose to the top merged at least two of these criteria, and something in each of these works made me come back to engage with them over and over. It was that staying power that determined the final selections for this show.
I hope you enjoy the exhibition! - Janet Ballweg
